He was 33. The police said Mr Carter's body and several letters to friends and family were discovered in his pick-up truck, parked in a Johannesburg suburb. An inquest showed that he had died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Mr Carter started as a sports photographer in 1983 but soon moved to the front lines of South African political strife, recording images of repression, anti-apartheid protest and fratricidal violence. A few davs after winning his Pulitzer Prize in April, Mr Carter was nearby when one of his closest friends and professional companions, Ken Oosterbroek, was shot dead photographing a gun battle in Tokoza township.

Friends said Mr Carter was a man of tumultuous emotions which brought passion to his work but also drove him to extremes of elation and depression. Last year, saying he needed a break from South Africa's turmoil, he paid his own way to the southern Sudan to photograph a civil war and famine that he felt the world was overlooking.

His picture of an emaciated girl collapsing on the way to a feeding centre, as a plump vulture lurked in the background, was published first in The New York Times and The Mail & Guardian, a Johannesburg weekly. The reaction to the picture was so strong that The New York Times published an unusual editor's note on the fate of the girl. Mr Carter said she resumed her trek to the feeding centre. He chased away the vulture.

Afterwards, he told an interviewer, he sat under a tree for a long time, "smoking cigarettes and crying". His father, Mr Jimmy Carter laid last night: "Kevin always carried around the horror of the work he did." - The New York Times

Source: Sydney Morning Herald Saturday 30 July 1994

This image has sturred parts of me I forgot I had. Everyone should read this entire page. This man ultimately died to push people out of their homegrown apathy. I honestly question where we as a people- we as a species are heading. If such atrocities can be permitted where is the line? Can we ever go back? I am not sure what to say- which is a rare occasion indeed. What could possibly do that poor little girl's memory, and the photojournalist's memory any justice that I could say? I've seen this picture 10 times before I wrote a word about it because I was waiting for something meaningful to say- yet weeks later I have more questions than I do answers. I even went so far as to look for more information about this photographer and the plight of that poor girl- when I stumbled (StumbleUpon saves the day again) upon this site.
I fear escalation. Things can either get better or worse- and usually it is the latter that rears its ugly head. I can't imagine the possibilites and I don't want to. I just want to prevent them.

M. This has been going on for 3 years. The Janjaweed is a government supported militia enlisted from local Arab tribes who are commiting mass murder.
There have been over 400,000 lives ended, and over 2.5 million (I suppose that doesn't really show how many people have been displaced as well as 2,500,000) people ripped from the only homes they've ever known. There are over 100 people hunted down each day, and monthly its over 5,000.
This isn't even a matter of religion. The Darfur region is a melting pot in itself. There are racially mixed tribes of peasants recently settled who are African, and Arab nomdic herders. Both groups are generally Muslim. This is racial cleansing. Didn't we learn our lesson from all the other examples of ethnic cleansing? The lessons learned from the Native Americans (The Long Walk of the Navajo, the Trail of Tears,) the Serbs, The Jews, or the Yugoslav wars weren't enough?
In September of 2004 the W.H.O. (World Health Organization) estimated there had been over 50,000 deaths in Darfur since the beginning- and that was mostly the result of mass starvation. Then the number jumped by more than 20,000 in October of the same year. The cause? Starvation and disease. That was 2 years ago. Imagine the estimates now.
A recent BPR (British Parliamentary Report) estimates are far worse than we were previously led to believe. 300,000 people have already died, add the U.N. estimates that 180,000 more have died in the past 18 months.
Before the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake the U.N called Darfur the worlds worst humanitarian crisis. Now that is saying something.
The Sudanese government is publicly denying having any part in this atrocity, and its support of the Janjaweed, but on the same breath is providing arms and assistance to the group. The government has even gone so far as to participate in joint attacks with the Janjaweed.
We as Americans are constantly sticking our noses where they don't belong, and are quick to support those leaders who are quick to act in the interests of American conglomerates, but never the interests of humanity as a whole.
The only thing the American government has done was offer a motion to begin plans to send UN peacekeepers to Darfur (02/06.) The Security Council unanimously agreed to begin the planning process, with a final decision to come later. This is the stickler- even though the U.S. put forward the motion, the U.S. isn't planning or expected to contribute enforcement to the UN's mission.
Most recently the Sudanese government signed an accord with the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA.) The agreement was dismissed by two other smaller groups- the Justice and Equality Movement, and a rival faction of the SLA.

I am reminded of the quotation, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

If you want to help or find out more, please visit the following sites.
Wikipedia- Darfur Conflict
Genocide Intervention Network
Darfur News (Crimes of War Project)
The BBC's Q&A: Sudan's Darfur Conflict
Answers.com Darfur Conflict
Amnesty International
Human Rights Watch
USAID: Sudan: Darfur Humanitarian Emergency - Satellite Images
Coalition for Darfur

M. It showed up again in a totally different format and on a different site. So it would appear I was meant to continue this trend.

20 Amazing Facts About Voting In The United States

By Bob Rowe

1. 80% of all votes in America are counted by only two companies: Diebold and ES&S.

2. There is no federal agency with regulatory authority or oversight of the US voting machine industry.

3. The vice-president of Diebold and the president of ES&S are brothers.

4. The chairman and CEO of Diebold is a major Bush campaign organizer and donor who wrote in 2003 that he was "committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year."

5. 35% of ES&S is owned by Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, who became Senator based on votes counted by ES&S machines.

6. Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, a long-time friend of the Bush family, was caught lying about his ownership of ES&S by the Senate Ethics Committee.

7. Senator Chuck Hagel was on a short list of George W. Bush's vice- presidential candidates.

8. ES&S is the largest voting machine manufacturer in the US and counts almost 60% of all US votes.

9. Diebold's new touch screen voting machines have no paper trail of any votes. In other words, there is no way to verify that the data coming out of the machine is the same as what was legitimately put in by voters.

10. Diebold also makes ATMs, checkout scanners, and ticket machines, all of which log each transaction and can generate a paper trail.

11. Diebold is based in Ohio.

12. Diebold employs 5 convicted felons as developers. These are the people who write the voting machine computer code.

13. Diebold's Senior Vice-President, Jeff Dean, was convicted of 23 counts of felony theft in the first degree.

14. Diebold Senior Vice-President Jeff Dean was convicted of planting back doors in his software and using a "high degree of sophistication" to evade detection over a period of 2 years.

15. None of the international election observers were allowed in the polls in Ohio.

16. California banned the use of Diebold machines because the security was so bad. Despite Diebold's claims that the audit logs could not be hacked, a chimpanzee was able to do it! (See the movie at http://blackboxvoting.org/baxter/baxterVPR.mov.)

17. 30% of all US votes are carried out on unverifiable touch screen voting machines with no paper trail. 18. Bush's Help America Vote Act of 2002 has as its goal to replace all machines with the new electronic touch screen systems with no paper trail.

18. All -- not some -- but all the voting machine errors detected and reported went in favor of Bush or Republican candidates.

19. The governor of the state of Florida, Jeb Bush, is the President's brother.

20. Major statistical voting oddities (odds on the order of 250 million to 1!) -- again always favoring Bush -- have been mathematically demonstrated by experts.

Such amazing odds, the equivalent of statistical miracles these were. One of my favorite series ever. But this guy has raised the level of fanboy devotion/delusion to a whole new level. Way to raise the bar dickface. I'll just tune in on Fridays and leave it at that.
This guy seriously shows how horrible a human can be. This is despicable. I don't care if God comes down and tells me to stab a child with a butter knife once- I'm not doing it. Much less 73 times. That is foul. The worst part was his excuse- the child was Judas Iscariot. I hope he rots in hell. So very sad. My heart goes out to the family and friends of the child.

M. Everyone should have the help they need. Cutting isn't the healthiest way to cope- but it is a coping stratagy. It's way down on the list of things you can do but it isn't the worst. I wear my scars proudly- because I survived. I am still around. I found the help I needed and am controling my urges.
A lot of these things worked really well for me. Now this wasn't purposeful. I wanted to post so badly... hell I wanted the internet so badly. It's been weeks since I've been online. Its been a virtual hell... well I guess not virtual. It was a real hell. If I am as bad of a person as I think I am, hell for me will be the same as Earth is now- except without the internet. Maybe the internet will be everywhere but I can't access it for some reason.
I remember once I was in my bedroom, surfing the web, watching TV, and talking on the phone (aren't I the multi-tasker?) Suddenly the lights flicker when I walk by the switch. I ignored it- then I touch my computer and the internet completely goes dead. Not a real problem there, I go upstairs and start troubleshooting. I reset my cable modem, my wifi router, run an ipconfig and all the other junk that goes along with being a nerd that knows how to do these things. Nothing is wrong at all. So I'm noticebly aggitated at this point. So I run downstairs and hop on the iBook to test it out again. Nothing- no connection. I grab the remote control to the TV and boom GONE. Nothing is on any of the channels, no sound, nothing. So I'm freaking out- my technology has failed me... or I've finally gained a superpower which under normal circumstances is great. But talk about the worst power for a geek. Being a walking blackout. I shudder to think. So with one last glimmer of hope I grab my cell phone and call up my girlfriend. My phone isn't dead- its looking at me with my desktop clone and everything. But it won't make incoming calls, won't send text messages- and recieveing them? I'll give you two guesses and one of them doesn't count. I was seriously freaking out at this point. That was a little slice of hell that night.
But that had nothing to do with what I was saying. A lot of bad things have kind of happened all at once. I lost my job, and then got evicted all in once day. So for the last little while I've had no place of my own to stay other than my friend's house. Its been really hard, but its been quite the learning experience. I can honestly say I was being irresponsible to the point of retardation. I figured I was young enough to have everything given to me, and I would just slide by and continue to party every night, drink all the time, and smoke all the weed I wanted with out any recourse. Well I was wrong. That officer knocked on my door and I shit a golden brick right there. But I'm back, hopefully for good this time. Looking for a new job, and a new apartment- but things will fall into place the way they are supposed to be in their own time. I have to make things happen on my own, but life will go on whatever route it wishes to take. Say la vi.

M. Man I would be all over that. I was thinking about refabing my PC tower into an all enclusive DVR/Game Console in a few months. But seriously if Apple even gave this rumor a bit of evidence I would wait for this one.
The only real proof out right now is Steve Jobs' statement after a question on the Windows Media Center system which supposedly went like this, "we hear you loud and clear."
This article brings up a good point- why would Apple make a DVR when they are already selling you most of the shows on the tele on iTunes? This would certainly throw off those sales. But it's Apple- usually they are the peoples republic of technology. I've been known to sing this sone in the DMV, court, walking down the street. A couple of times we've gotten an entire party to sing this song @ once. Hilarious.

Freddie Mercury is a bad ass. He wrote this in 1975 (I say late '74) for their album "A Night At The Opera." This is also the Guiness Book of World Record's Number 1 song of ALL TIME. I agree. This song comes on and I seriously start playing all the instruments in the band and bounce around the room w/ my air band and sing this song at the top of my lungs. I am certainly not one to downplay the superhuman powers of attention & observance my various acts of perversion & depravity have granted. So out of the corner of my eye I notice the word C-U-M. I was blown away... pun seriously not intended.
On the upside I did notice that I'd been using the word wrong... and in the wrong situations. Watching TV it hit me, when one of those weird AS bumps was on between commercial breaks. Those would be perfect. I'm sure I'd be one of the only people in the world with them on my ways outside of the CN employees. So I decided to collect all the AS (Cartoon Network's late night programming block Adult Swim) bumps I could find and download them and take them to a print shop to put in a decent sized poster format that would be easy to swap out weekly, maybe switch through out the apartment so the walls are always different or something cool like that.

But to my dismay- there aren't as many hardcore AS fans as I thought. I mean I'm not one of those silly bastards who praises everything they put on TV. God knows that Tom Goes To The Mayor is the biggest peice of sh*t on television. If I knew Tom personally I would have punched him in the nuts at the mere mention of what he planned for his "cutting edge animation." I hate that show with a passion.

So I go to the ultimate answer source for all things Geek (outside of my del.icio.us account-) Google. But alas it was of no use- only 2 pages of images found. I was dismayed. Now if I hadn't been a little buzzed at the time, I would have realized a simple plain ol' everyday search would have rendered brilliant results. The next day clairity came and I searched... I found greatness- my dreams had been realized and given a home.

Anyways- enough of the melodrama, thanks to BumpWorthy I've got them all. So in a day or two I'm off to Kinko's to give my apartment the geeky fandom AS deserves until my next random decorating idea strikes.

M. Driving my defunct Geo Prizim I drove across town to her home to drop her off a cigarette b/c she was nic'in out. How I met her before escapes me, and honestly it doesn't matter anymore b/c I have her.
Anyways she walked up in a cute pink shortsleeve shirt, super tight jeans (that made her hips and booty look phenominal,) and one of those punk rock metal studded belts. Now from the belt- you'd expect she wasn't my type, but there was something about her. She was young, intelligent, and quite possibly the most gentle flower I've ever graced.

Just seeing her quickened my pulse and had me thinking some seriously naughty things (I was a young horndog what do you expect?) I knew I had to see more of her, had to touch her... so I did every underhanded, sneaky, and sometimes romantic thing I could do to have her. We had our youthful fun, a fling if you will and it was wonderful. Then it ended, and at first it was no big deal. I told myself it was no sweat off my back, and she wasn't "the one" or anything special like that.
But I soon realized I was gravely wrong. Quite possibly the most wrong I've ever been in my life (this was one of those times that happens every 11 years or so when the sun enters a new solar cycle.) I'd been lying to myself for months- and those months ended up being years. I loved her and never realized it. I took her for granted and lost her so quickly because I was rash, callous, and immature. Now don't get me wrong there were girls that came along the way, plenty just to fill in void the loss of her created. But there was always her. After a while I got the balls to message her when I noticed her online to atleast try to be her friend. I needed her in my life anyway I could have her because she meant so much to me. As the weeks carried on we chatted it up, and became close friends. Then I found out she had found someone else. I was devestated- completely and utterly. She moved on, and I hadn't come close.
So being the smooth operator I am, I tried my hardest to get her back (albeit online isn't the slickest surface to skate on.) She shut me down everytime... she was in love with this bastard, who was pretending to be the sexual caramel I naturally am. Then it got worse. Just when she was ready to end things with him (not to get w/ the hero of this story but because he was a douche bag) she told me he was in an accident and she couldn't leave him because he needed her. Now this is probably the sickest part of the story- I had 2 options, throw myself in front of a bus so I could "need her in the way he did" or plan b (my personal favorite) I could go against my very calm, patient, and peaceful nature and pray or plan this bastards imminent demise. Trust me- I prayed hard, maybe harder than I've prayed for anything in my life. He never croaked, but slowly we fell out of touch and talked far less frequently than before.
Then one day, smoking a blunt and riding in my boys rodeo I saw a very familiar ass. I mean if you saw her ass you would notice it from 100yds- her booty is perfect. So I ran through all the possible asses I've seen that would be this close to my house and none came to mind. Approx. 10 feet later it clicked (10 feet comes fast when you are doing 45-50mph) it was her. It was my Jessy! I screamed her name and soon realized how my emotional outburst or plea for attention would sound in a car full of my boys so I added some catcall to it. But she turned... it was her. My heart stopped. As we drove by I couldn't help but stare at her, she was still as lovely and sexy and perfect as the day I met her. Then I noticed the shirt she was wearing and how there just happened to be an establishment in the direction she was walking. It took me weeks to get the nerve to order something from her in hopes she'd pick up the phone. There was definitely some trial and error, but finally I heard the words I'd been waiting for, "******'s ***** home of the ******* *****, this is Jessy how can I help you?" I was almost speechless. This was my chance so I wasn't going to fuck this one up. So I grabbed my balls and talked. We exchanged numbers and chatted it up.
I met her a short while later as she had moved so very close to my residence. I couldn't have been happier. We took a walk in the park or something. Honestly its a blur but I remember every second of what she was doing, saying, and how she looked saying them. God- I still loved her, and I needed her more than ever. Finally after some slick talkin and a lot of walks around the park we were back together. This was last summer, and that summer may have been the happiest summer I've ever had. Then after a stupid fight I let my more spiteful side kick me in the teeth. I move about 105mi away from her and pledged to her a long distance relationship. This was the loneliest 2 months of my life. I vowed to be committed to her so I never let any other felines cross my path. So I decided I would do anything to be close to her again. So I bounced out my apartment and moved back to the city. Everything was ok for a while, but it went down hill. This too was my fault... and it ended again. I was so depressed, I mean depressed- literally at the end of my rope. Ever hear of walking the razors edge?

Thankfully she is the most amazing beautiful & forgiving angel I've ever known. We mended things the best we could and moved on to our future together. We've still got stuff to work on, but after reading what I've wrote, and remembering all the things we've been through together and apart I've never been more resolved at making this work, and completely committed to making her as happy as I can again. I know I can do it. I have faith in us, I have faith in my wifey, and I love her more than I've ever loved anything or one in my entire life. There is no one else for me, and there will never be anyone else. I totally believe I will spend the rest of my life with her.

I love you Princess/Jessy Bear/Bunny/Angel/Wifey... you are everything to me. You are my world, and the sun it revolves around.

Look how blissful I am. I know all you right wing Bush supporters will see this as "necessary"- but can you honestly say its worth it when you compare it to the costs of public education, housing, AIDs, world or even national hunger? Thats bullshit. I mean I see the whole, "well we just can't pull out" arguement. That part is at least halfway intelligent- you can't free a people and then leave them in anarchy. But you also can't be so concerned with other countries business when yours is going down the crap hole. I would much rather have one child educated than to be able to afford just one more nuclear warhead.
Seriously.
We have enough nuclear warheads to blow the world to hell 500x over. I don't think we need more weapons. In the event of a nuclear world war everyone is just gonna launch everything they have and see each other in hell. Normally I'm not a nokia fan (since my disappointing 6230 that I bought from overseas a year or 2 early) but this is cool. Nokia 's looking to make a jump into the VoIP industry.
The 6136 is a quad-band phone that will connect to GSM networks (that means it'll not only work in Europe- but in the US as well.) It comes with an FM Radio, a 1.3 megapixel camera, and takes microSD memory cards for extra storage.

I'll say this is pretty cool... damn sometimes I wish I wasn't under Verizon so I could get all these cool new GSM phones w/o paying for a Verizon world phone.

Simple & Elegant, but it seems like the next few models will be feature packed. We'll see what happens when it is actually released.

More @ Nokia embraces convergence with Wi-Fi phone - ZDNet UK News

M. My new roommate- Brett!

Halfer, Jessy (my woman,) Ashley, and I kickin' it in my kitchen starting the night out drinking.

Aww my girlfriend can't hold her liquor... how cute... this would be the point when I was in the back bedroom of a friend's drunk as a monkey caught in an everclear factory trying to take care of her.

Hahaha The Big Z drank a bit too much this night as well and had to walk outside and lay down on the landing leading up to my apartment. He was outside in the cold on the concrete for like 30-45min.

Happy 21st Birthday Brett! Thats a Vintage Brett Pose right there. How enjoyable.

You gotta hump it- before you pump it. Ashtray getting goosed on by SWAT.

These last two just make me laugh b/c of the story behind them. So the pale guy who looks like a glazed donut- was my old roommate. Meet Jeremy. Jeremy this is everyone. So Jeremy thought it would be a brilliant idea to take the container off a food processor (which is the only part that keeps you away from the blades) and manages to ghetto rig the lid to activate the blades. Well the big moron decides to turn it on full blast and accidentally drops his thumb in there. Now that was great- pure comedy. But then Jeremy (who has to have hematophobia) goes straight into shock. I'm not talking a few moments later- I'm saying INSTANTLY. Within seconds he's the ghastly glazed spectre you see below, whimpering about how he's gonna pass out from blood loss and how one of us should call 911... for a little gash in his thumb. Its not like it was fatal, dangerous, or ambulance worthy. So Brett, Rich, and I continue rolling on the floor laughing, pointing, and trying to snap as many photos as we could. For any of you who are worried- he's fine. We did some at home first aid (once we regained our composure & stopped laughing) and closed his wounds up w/ some super glue.

M. Almost makes you ashamed of being human. We are seriously a plague upon the Earth. People seriously cannot concider this a "milestone." It's a disaster waiting to happen. Our planet cannot seriously sustain people. I like sex- I love sex. But I also live 4-10x above the average world wide poverty level and I have forms of birth control readily available. But anyways- my anger @ the human race as a whole kinda drew me off track. I was really just gonna say, "I love gays."

I'm not gay but let me tell you I love them. This article is the reason. 2 men can't make a baby. 2 women can't make a baby. In these relationships it takes 3-4 people to create life. (2 future homosexual parents, 1 donor or surrogate, or 2 genetic parents to adopt from) Gays & Lesbians can only adopt or turn to science to create life. You guys get the thumbs up b/c most of you that I've known are just as happy w/ adoption. Which means that there is one less kid for the Christian Childrens Fund or Sally Struthers to hawk on television during prime cartoon hours. If I weren't straight I'd say screw it and join the team but girls are just so damn fine. Like this fine peice of genetic perfection. Damn I love my baby girl.

M. It is the age of the blog, blogger, blogroll, news aggregators, all culminating into a blogosphere. (I promise that was all the ridiculous pop terminology I'll spout again.) Anyways I'm just saying just like in real life- I'm fashionably late.

So expect a good amount of humor, maybe a new spin on something you already knew about, and maybe more. Let's try not to put a genre on my blog just yet. I'm notorious for going w/ the flow.

Anyways- first up... An oldie but a goodie. This site maybe one of the funniest web pages I've stumbled across in a very long time. Basically this guy is a professional video editor in CA and he just goes through commercials from 1997 until the present(his last update was sometime 2006) and he just viciously tears the commercials new assholes (if they had them.) Make sure to check out the 2006 SuperBowl Special. He was writing his reviews as he was watching the game. If you would have checked back 1-3 commecials later there would be a new review up. The first line in the site is, "I started this site in 1997 because the advertising industry thinks we're stupid. Commercials assume the worst about us. Commercials use ugly stereotypes to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
That's nasty and insulting. Lucky for you, my reader, so am I." Which is absolutely true he is.
Well here is to the first of many posts. Cheers.

Commercials I Hate

I also found this hilarious. While shopping in a local asian market I ran across this can and doubled over in laughter. The dude doesn't look funny or anything- he's a normal everyday Asian Teen Dream. But can you imagine being that guy? I would probably walk around w/ a can of whatever it is on me all the time. Hell I'd only go into bars that sold it and I'd create an entire wardrobe around this damned can and the picture of me on it. Man. He must get so much play from the ladies- or the men. He is a little metro.

M.
